Corporate Social Responsibility

Tatweer is committed to contributing to the economic and social prosperity of the Kingdom of Bahrain, and to acting as a good neighbor in the local community.

Economic and social prosperity
Through an estimated investment of US$ 15 billion over the next 20 years in redeveloping the Bahrain Field, Tatweer Petroleum will make a significant contribution to energizing Bahrain’s overall economic growth and social prosperity. The Company is committed to giving preference to local contractors, merchants and the business community in terms of procurement and partnering; and to giving priority to Bahrainis in terms of employment and career development.
In 2010, Tatweer spent a total of US$ 345 million through 200 contracts and 1,300 purchases; and created 240 new jobs, with many of them going to young Bahrainis. At the end of the year, 63 per cent of the total workforce comprised Bahraini nationals, and this is planned to grow to between 80 and 90 per cent in the future.

Tatweer Petroleum plays an important role in the future growth and development of many of the key industries in Bahrain. The oil that the Company produces is refined by Bapco, and used to meet the Kingdom’s needs as well as for exports to generate revenues for Government projects. Non-associated gas is used to power many of the largest industries such as Alba and GPIC, and power and water desalination plants at Hidd and Al Dur; while associated gas is converted by Banagas into LPG products for export.

Good neighbor
Camping in the Kingdom of Bahrain is a long-held annual tradition that takes place during the cooler weather from November to March. The campsites are largely located in the midst of the Bahrain Field where Tatweer Petroleum conducts the bulk of its oil and gas drilling and producing operations. To inform and educate the public about potential dangers in this area, the Company launched its Safe Camping Campaign in 2010.

After reviewing the results of the Baseline Environmental Study, Tatweer collaborated with key governmental stakeholders, such as the Southern Governorate, to develop a fully integrated Camping Preparation Plan with a clear mandate to protect and educate the camping community about the possible hazards associated with camping in an active oil and gas field. This included erecting large billboards with prominent safety prevention messages around the area; and distributing a dual language pamphlet as part of the camper registration process, containing clear safety guidelines and emergency contact information. An additional 34,000 “Safe Camping” pamphlets were distributed to Bahraini families through local newspapers.

Tatweer also introduced HSE and camper exclusion zones by placing fencing and “no camping” signs in all areas evaluated as of higher risk. A total of 20 kilometers of safety fencing was installed to cordon off 70 planned drilling pad sites, 18 facility locations, 3 main operational areas, and major pipelines. At the same time, the number of security enforcement patrols assigned to the camping area was increased. As a result of these efforts, over 2,000 camp owners (with 6,500 tents) registered and received the initial Tatweer safety immersion. The Company continuously monitors and enhances the Safe Camping program through regular coordination meetings between with governmental stakeholders.

In addition to this major exercise, Tatweer Petroleum implements its corporate social responsibility by providing financial and practical support for a number of charitable, cultural, social, medical, educational, and environmental organizations and initiatives.
