Health, Safety & Environment

Underlying Tatweer's goal to increase production is the Company's commitment to operate safely and in an environmentally sound manner.

Tatweer adopts industry-leading practices to ensure the safety and health of employees, contractors and neighbors, and to constantly enhance its efforts to protect the environment.

During 2010, the Company made excellent progress in instilling an HSE culture across the organization. An initial Environmental Baseline was completed and an HSE Management System was designed and approved. A 'Near Miss' program was launched, the Emergency Response Plan was successfully tested, and Heat Stress Management was implemented.

Special training modules, in English and Arabic, were developed, with over 4,000 hours of training being delivered during the year. Modules covered HSE orientation, permit to work, hydrogen sulphide, process risk management, defensive driving and swine flu precautions. A customized safety training program for contractors was also developed. Following a special orientation course, personal protection equipment (PPE) was distributed to over 400 staff. This comprises a safety helmet, steel-capped boots, safety glasses/goggles, an H2S (hydrogen sulphide) gas monitor, and overalls.

A notable HSE achievement during the year was the development of an Environmental Permitting Strategy in close collaboration with the General Directorate of Environmental and Wildlife Protection. This resulted in the receipt of a Letter of No Objection for the following projects: Electrical Substation and Power Distribution, Central Control Facility, and Waterflood, which are key elements of the redevelopment of the Bahrain Field.

The combined (Tatweer employees and contractors) injury illness rate was well under the target rate during the year, with a combined result of 0.92; while the number of reportable spills was 48 versus the annual target of 60 spills. Final safety statistics for the year were in line with international benchmarks.
